Privacy Policy
TaxPayCalculator (“we”, “us”, “our”) respects your privacy and is committed to handling personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This Policy explains how we collect, use, store, disclose and protect personal information when you use the TaxPayCalculator website.
1. Who we are
TaxPayCalculator provides an online Australian take-home pay estimate tool. For privacy questions, contact us at privacy@taxpaycalculator.com.au.
If we are an APP entity under the Privacy Act, this Policy describes how we comply with our obligations. If the Privacy Act does not apply to us in a particular case (for example, because we fall under an exemption), we still aim to follow the spirit of the APPs.
2. What personal information we collect
“Personal information” means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable, as defined in the Privacy Act.
Depending on how you use TaxPayCalculator, we may collect:
- Calculator inputs you enter — such as salary or wage amounts, pay frequency, hours, residency status, whether you have a HELP/HECS debt, private health cover settings, deductions, and similar tax-related figures. These are used only to produce your on-screen estimate.
- Contact information — if you email us (for example, name and email address, and the content of your message).
- Technical and usage data — such as IP address, browser type, device type, pages viewed, referring URL, and approximate location derived from IP, which may be collected by our hosting provider or analytics tools if enabled.
- Cookie and similar technology data — see section 8.
We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not require your name, Tax File Number (TFN), bank details, or employer identity to use the calculator. Please do not send us your TFN or other government-related identifiers by email unless we specifically and lawfully request them (we do not currently request TFNs).
3. How we collect personal information
We collect personal information:
- Directly from you when you type into the calculator, contact us, or otherwise interact with the site (APP 3).
- Automatically through your device and browser when you visit the site (for example, server logs or cookies).
- From service providers that help us host, secure, or improve the site, where those providers process information on our behalf.
Where it is reasonable and practicable, we collect personal information only from you. If you provide information about another person (for example, household income assumptions), you must have that person’s authority to do so.
4. Why we collect and how we use it (APP 6)
We collect and use personal information to:
- Provide and operate the TaxPayCalculator website and tools
- Respond to enquiries, feedback, or complaints
- Maintain security, prevent misuse, and troubleshoot issues
- Understand aggregated usage so we can improve accuracy and usability
- Comply with Australian law and respond to lawful requests
Client-side calculation: Salary and tax settings you enter are processed in your browser to generate estimates. We do not require you to submit those figures to a TaxPayCalculator account. If we later introduce features that store your inputs (for example, saved scenarios), we will update this Policy and, where required, notify you or seek consent.
We will not use or disclose personal information for a secondary purpose unless an APP exception applies (for example, you would reasonably expect it, you consent, or use/disclosure is required or authorised by law).
5. Disclosure of personal information (APP 6)
We may disclose personal information to:
- Service providers — such as website hosting, content delivery, email, security, and analytics providers who process information under contractual obligations
- Professional advisers — such as lawyers or accountants, where reasonably necessary
- Regulators or law enforcement — where required or authorised by Australian law (including the Privacy Act)
- A successor entity — if TaxPayCalculator is involved in a merger, sale, or restructuring, subject to appropriate protections
We do not sell your personal information. We do not disclose calculator inputs to third parties for their own marketing.
6. Overseas disclosure (APP 8)
Some of our service providers may store or process information on servers located outside Australia (for example, in the United States, European Union, or Asia-Pacific). Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure the overseas recipient does not breach the APPs in relation to that information, or we otherwise rely on an APP 8 exception (such as your consent, or where required/authorised by law).
By using TaxPayCalculator, you acknowledge that overseas recipients may not be subject to the Privacy Act, and you may not be able to seek redress under the Privacy Act against those recipients.
7. Storage and security (APP 11)
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information we hold from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Measures may include HTTPS encryption in transit, access controls, and limiting staff/contractor access to what is needed.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please keep your own devices secure when using TaxPayCalculator.
We take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify personal information when it is no longer needed for any purpose for which it may be used or disclosed under the APPs, unless we are required by law to retain it.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
TaxPayCalculator may use cookies, local storage, or similar technologies to remember preferences, keep the site working, and understand how the site is used.
- Essential — needed for basic site operation and security
- Preference — remember settings you choose (if enabled)
- Analytics — help us understand aggregated traffic (if enabled)
You can usually control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect site features. Where required, we will provide additional notice or choice for non-essential cookies.
9. Direct marketing (APP 7)
We do not currently send marketing emails as part of using the calculator. If we start a mailing list or similar, we will only use your personal information for direct marketing where permitted under APP 7 (including where you would reasonably expect it, or you have consented), and we will always provide a simple opt-out.
10. Children and young people
TaxPayCalculator is a general audience tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children for the purpose of profiling or marketing. If you believe a child has provided us personal information inappropriately, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it where appropriate.
11. Access and correction (APPs 12 & 13)
You may request access to the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading.
Email privacy@taxpaycalculator.com.au with “Privacy access request” or “Privacy correction request” in the subject line. We may need to verify your identity. We will respond within a reasonable period (generally within 30 days).
In some cases we may refuse access or correction where the Privacy Act allows. If we refuse, we will tell you why (unless unreasonable) and how to complain.
12. Complaints
If you have a privacy complaint, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it:
Email: privacy@taxpaycalculator.com.au
We will acknowledge your complaint and aim to investigate and respond within a reasonable time.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):
- Website: www.oaic.gov.au
- Phone: 1300 363 992
- Online complaint form available on the OAIC website
13. Not tax, financial or legal advice
TaxPayCalculator provides estimates only. It is not personal tax, financial or legal advice. Using the calculator does not create an accountant–client or adviser relationship. Always check figures with the ATO, your payroll provider, or a qualified adviser for your circumstances.
14. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of TaxPayCalculator after an update means you accept the revised Policy, to the extent permitted by law. Material changes may be highlighted on the site.
