Salary sacrifice
Salary sacrifice calculator
See how a pre-tax sacrifice changes taxable income and take-home pay. The calculator does not check super contribution caps.
What is sacrificed, and what is not
A salary sacrifice is an amount redirected out of your cash salary before income tax, often into super. It is not the 12% your employer already pays on top. This page compares $95,000 with nothing sacrificed and the same salary with $5,000 sacrificed. Caps and extra contributions tax for high incomes are explained on the ATO super rates and thresholds.
| No sacrifice | $5,000 sacrificed | |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable income | $95,000.00 | $90,000.00 |
| Income tax | $19,020.00 | $17,520.00 |
| Medicare levy | $1,900.00 | $1,800.00 |
| Take-home pay | $74,080.00 | $70,680.00 |
Take-home pay falls by less than $5,000 because the tax on the sacrificed slice is lower. The $5,000 itself is no longer in your bank account.
Estimates for an Australian resident who claims the tax-free threshold. Employer super is 12% on top of ordinary earnings unless you mark the salary as including super. Full-time hours are 38 a week across 52 weeks, with no overtime. HELP is included only when that option is on. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly nets follow ATO withholding, so they can differ from the annual net split evenly. This is not personal tax advice.
